About this deal

Based on the experiences of real-life Auschwitz prisoner Dita Kraus, this is the incredible story of a girl who risked everything to preserve the legacy and vital knowledge of books during the Holocaust. While at times a little too "novel-y" (and not in a good way), LIBRARIAN is still an important and compelling graphic novel. My thoughts are definitely inadequate as to how to convey the horrific atrocities that occurred during this time in history that many would like to forget or ignore. During those times, it felt as if the character stepped away from the story and was educating the reader on the history of what happened. But it is inconsistent in content and this would probably not be appropriate for children ages 8-12.

G.Wells’ “History of the World”, a Russian grammar, a Russian novel, Dumas’ “The Count of Monte Cristo”, a book by Freud, and Hasek’s “The Good Soldier Svejk”. And it is incredible (I’m not exactly sure what word to use to describe a book as harrowing as this). If it wasn’t for the fact that I’m one of the leaders of a book club who was able to read material this heavy at the present time, I would have DNF’d this book early on. this is a difficult for me to rate, as i have found to be the case with many WWII/holocaust stories that are based on real life people but written as a work of fiction. Incidentally, at the end of the book, the author describes his meeting with Dita Kraus and how they went to Terezin together. But any novel that presents even the slightest positivity regarding the Holocaust is dangerous in this current climate. Dita is brave and steadfast, and becomes the librarian of a barrack used as a school in case of an inspection. What’s more, the camp section of the story – the largest section of the story – details more than just Dita’s experiences.

On the first night of Passover, families usually gather around the table and read the Haggadah, which tells of the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt. This novel is one that could easily be recommended or taught alongside Elie Wiesel's Night and The Diary of Anne Frank and a text that, once read, will never be forgotten. In doing so, I found her reiterating portions of the book that one may have assumed were fictional, simply based on the cruel nature of the matter; yet, astonishingly, they really occurred. There were points in the story where I felt he lost sight of the story, and it read a little like a history book.To make room for them, those who have been there for six months are moved on to a quarantine camp, BIIa, and from there for “special treatment”. Totalmente recomendable, una novela gráfica que emana sentimiento y que te hace desear darle una oportunidad al libro en el que se basa. The Sunday Times bestseller for readers of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, The Tattooist of Auschwitz and The Choice.

This task, if found out, would be punishable by death but our brave female protagonist opts to take on the role despite that. Like most of the Nazis’ Jewish victims, Dita’s family in Prague is unprepared for the upheaval. Told with all the horror of their lives and yet with a tenderness, love, and hope for the future that books often provide, this was a wonderful story that highlighted the courage of many especially that of a young fourteen year old child.
