Things go well at first, with Gizmo taking to Billy as a cute pet, but, when a friend spills water on Gizmo, five more mogwai spawn. It offers excellent clarity, clean dialogue, a medium-wide front soundstage, lightly atmospheric use of the surrounds (except when the chaos begins, when there’s very nice directionally and movement), and a full sound.When Billy Peltzer (Zach Gilligan) is given the cute and friendly little Mogwai, Gizmo (voiced by Howie Mandel), for Christmas, he is told never to expose it to bright light, get it wet or ever feed it after midnight. It is also great to see a horror film where the parents actually believe the children instead of doubting them, and they are fighting alongside the children against these hideous creatures. Peltzer’s a big bear of a man with heart, and a love of the inventions he hopes will make him a mint for his family. The movie has a very 1980s feel, with smoky, hazy interiors and grimy exteriors, but the practical effects are impressive. Black levels are inkier and truer with silky, stygian shadows that penetrate deep into the screen, providing the 1.
