Benchouiha, Lucie (2006). Primo Levi: Rewriting the Holocaust. Troubador Publishing Ltd. ISBN 1-905237-23-5 The visible presence of these “soft” qualities induces far more discomfort in most men than the “hard” ones. But once they are brought out into the open and respected/honored — which takes courage — they can coexist with the capacity to express anger skillfully and take strongly directed action, empowering men in ways that serve the highest good of all of us. Every once in awhile someone comes along and writes a masterpiece, and Robert Augustus Masters’ To Be A Man falls into this category. His book is a true hero’s journey of healing and awakening, one that encourages men to cultivate a deep and enduring intimacy with everything that they are for the benefit of one and all. Father Larry does not pull any punches, and he is fully honest about his own weaknesses and failings. But in writing to men he draws extensively from the bible. In fact almost every paragraph has at least one biblical reference. This book is not an easy read, for any man who is open and honest while reading this book will find a few areas of his life that needs improvement. For some men it will directly speak to their weaknesses, or failures. For others it will be a guide to help them grow and avoid some of the pitfalls of manhood. We walked for almost an hour. But I don’t mind, I’ve always been a good walker. My father used to say that even as a little girl I would walk very far and never complain”.

This book is not for just Catholic men. I read it and enjoyed it. I am not Catholic. Yes, there are references to Catholic issues like confession, penance, rosary beads, etc. But Father Larry Richards has a great way of setting out the ten themes to making you a better man. He is a very good communicator. For each chapter he uses great examples, Bible verses (even some books of the Catholic Bible which Protestants don't hear of), humor, and straight forward no nonsense advice. This includes sex. What does a Priest know about sex? It isn't what a Priest knows about sex. It is what God, the creator of sex, knows about it. All aspects of a man's life are covered. This quote summarized the power of the book for me. Do I have desire or does desire have me? Do I have a relationship or does my relationship have me? Do I have anger/shame/sadness or do they have me? ETC ETC. There were a few interesting tidbits throughout Guyland, particularly how cultural and racial differences affect the behavior of young men. If you’ve read your share of popular advice on relationships and being a man — but realize on a gut level that it’s going to take some serious inner work — here’s a deeply practical guide to that most rewarding of challenges: doing what’s needed to fully embody your authentic manhood.

Until such shame (and shame in general) is recognized and understood, it will dominate — often from behind the scenes — men’s emotional and relational lives, obstructing their capacity to face and work through their unresolved wounding. Shame left unattended, shame left in the shadows, is shame that will run us from behind the scenes, disempowering us and determining far more of our behavior than we might imagine. He was arrested in December 1943 and transported to Auschwitz in February 1944. He remained there until the camp was liberated on 27 January 1945. [3] If This Is a Man recounts his experiences in the camp. I really wanted to like this book; I think it's a very interesting and relevant topic and I was curious to view it through the perspective of a man who is a "self-proclaimed former 'lad'". However, despite the thought provoking discussions Hemmings dives into I cannot overlook the glaring issues that are present throughout the entire read.

That might seem like a controversial thesis to some, but Baumeister lays it out in a very sensible, straightforward, non-inflammatory, and ultimately hard-to-argue-with way. Heuses studies from the growing fields of evolutionary psychology and sociobiology to explain why cultures have exploited men the way they have. And he explainshow and why certain aspectsof male and female behavior are hardwired and that these differences should be used to complement each other rather than asfodder in the gender wars. I follow him at a distance down the street. He passes under a mulberry tree, so I pass. He crosses to the other side, so I cross. He stops to look up at a tall building they are raising, and I too stop to look up, and it seems to me that I could go on doing this for a very long time, shadowing a life”. Save the Males is a book written by female writer, Kathleen Parker, who criticizes the feminist movement for creating the male-bashing culture that’s taken root in America during the past 30 years. She then goes on to argue how the anti-male rhetoric has been bad for both men and women. Winter has arrived. "Die Drei Leute vom Labor" ("The Three Laboratory People") describes how Levi and two other prisoners are chosen to work in the laboratory. Its cleanliness and warmth contrasts with the rest of the bomb-ravaged and snow-covered camp. The presence of three healthy women makes the prisoners self-conscious about their own physical deterioration.Moore describes the characteristics of the four archetypes and provides suggestions on how to develop them through meditation and ritual rites of passage. KWML has inspired many of the men’s groupsexistingtoday. Personally, I thought the very heavy Jungian-laden rhetoric made the book a bit of a slog to get through. I like Jung, but the way Moore presented it made it hard to get your mind around. Listen to my podcast interview with Dr. Waller Newell. Manhood in the Making: Cultural Concepts of Masculinity In the first chapter, "The Journey", Levi describes his experience as a partisan and his capture by fascist militia in December 1943. He is transferred to a detention camp near Modena. After several weeks, the six hundred and fifty Italian Jews in the camp are told that they will be leaving, their destination Auschwitz (a name which means nothing to them). They are crammed into freight cars without water; the train travels slowly through Austria, Czechoslovakia and into Poland. On arrival, those capable of work are separated from those who are not. Robert Augustus Masters was born in Victoria, British Columbia in 1947. From an early age he was an avid artist, but in high school switched to the sciences, with which he stayed until he found himself at the age of 21 in a PhD program in biochemistry. Little more than a year later, only a few hours after a dream of dying, he left his doctoral studies, and began an odyssey of intense travel, initially outer, then inner.
