Loved the way you got inside Batman’s head and his 4 year old’s reactions to what was happening around him. For all the toughness of Cleave's language, his self-congratulatory vernacular, Incendiary is sunk in bathos.Renata ‘Ren’ Convida is said memory thief, or more precisely a Robari – someone who can reach into other people’s minds and take away memories. Thank you to Hodder and Stoughton and Netgalley for allowing me to read this book early, this in no way affected my opinion of it. She sees herself and many others share her viewpoint as only being a weapon to be utilised, a loose cannon whose fuse is burning up. By contrast the character of Petra, who is expensively educated and speaks with exaggerated grammatical perfection, has nothing original to say. I loved the magical elements and how everything was set in the modern world where two magical races battle for power in Ireland.

I am not one who attends book groups and discusses the book, because most books I read are kind of like popcorn…you enjoy it while you’re eating it, but it’s not an experience that stays with you or stands out in your memory. This is most obvious with Dez, who we don’t spend much time with but who still feels like a pivotal part of the story nonetheless.I, like some others on here have never been to leave a comment on an Author’s page before – in all my 59 years of reading. The narrator’s feeling for husband and son are simply props in a series of scenes written for a bad actress. Fooled into using her powers against the Whispers by the promise of sweets and pretty dresses, she never quite gets over how vulnerable she was as a child and hates herself almost as much as the other whispers do. Indeed I feel that our lives rarely end happily, although that doesn’t exclude the possibility of their being graceful or inspiring. New York Times said it was "As benefits good genre fiction, Cleave's characters are sustained, driven and informed by the plot, which dictates and governs all". Because there are no characters worth caring about, we fail to identify the world of the novel as our own. There are plenty of other twists in there to keep you guessing and with the authors writing style you find yourself flying through the pages, unable to put it down.

A compelling world filled with beautiful, brutal magic and characters that feel real enough to touch -weighed down by memory and fueled by love and vengeance. The narrator is an obsessive---the kind who alphabetizes everything in her kitchen cupboards and freezer. The story takes place over the course of a year, with book sections for each of the seasons, as the narrator comes through a full cycle of change to arrive where she does at the end.Sure, maybe it's only a framing device so she can get all this off her chest, but it's not employed to very good effect. This is my very first time to leave a message for an author even though I am an avid reader and a memebr of a super book club for over 2 years. I used to believe that engaging in the creation of beauty (which is the only currency that I truly understand) had enough power to combat cruelty and ugliness, at least on some subtle level .
