About this deal

Part of our Seasonal Blends range, Mulled Wine is a sugar free blend of crisp apples, citrus and festive spice. You’ll be glad you did in the morning. All the flavour, none of the hangover. Easy. Homemade mulled wine is so simple to make with just 5 minutes prep and can be made in a large batch. Vanilla is also an unusual addition to Glühwein. I really like it in Glühwein – somehow it delivers a smoother taste and an aroma that is more comforting. You can reheat mulled wine in a coffee mug in the microwave or reheat leftover Gluhwein on the stove top.

Wine: No need to splurge on a pricey bottle — a mid-range bottle of dry red or white wine will do. (Or if you’re making a big batch, this is a great recipe to break out a nicer boxed wine too!) The best wine for mulled wine will be fruity and full-bodied, so that it can withstand the heat and not have its flavor completely drowned out by the aromatics. I recommend looking for a bottle of Zinfandel, Merlot, Grenache, Once you have your sachets made and placed in your jars, all that’s left is tying your tags onto the jars using ribbon or twine. Cut oranges and ginger root into 1/8-in. slices, and bake on a parchment-lined baking sheet for 3 to 4 hours at 170°. I also recommend including instructions for how to use the mulling spices to make mulled wine or apple cider.Germans and their rules: Vintners are not allowed to add tea or juice or anything to their Glühwein. According to the Wine Ordinance (§ 38 (1a)), Glühwein may only be called Vintner Glühwein if the Vintner produced it on their own premises, with their own grapes and only added aromas and spices and natural sugars. Gluhwein is the German word for mulled wine, translated as "glowing-wine." After one sip you will totally get the *glowing* feeling. Hibiscus flowers ( UK Link / US Link ) and whole rosehips ( UK Link / US Link ). To make mulled wine non alcoholic these loose herbal teas are used to replace red wine. They have a similar sweet and tart flavour to cranberries.

Alcohol free. This recipe uses hibiscus and rosehips herbal tea instead of red wine, rum or brandy. Germans even have Glühwein for children– called Kinderpunsch or Kinderglühwein (Kids’ punch or kids’ Glühwein). Of course, it does not contain any alcohol. However, it definitely contains tea. So isn’t it natural to put some tea in the adult version too? Tips for making the perfect Glühwein Do NOT boil the Glühwein. Glühwein is supposed to ‘glow’ and steam, but not boil. Bring it to the boil and then turn down the heat. Make some Glühwein with tea this Christmas! This tea can be made in a large batch and, after being left to cool completely, stored in an airtight glass pitcher in the fridge for up to 3 days. To reheat, pour the tea into a small milk pot and heat over a low heat until warm or your desired temperature is reached. If you’re lover of all things (non-alcoholic!) wine, take a look at the best virgin Sangria recipe.

If you prefer your Glühwein stronger (in alcohol), add a shot or two of rum or amaretto to the pot or a shot to the mug. Taste the Glühwein with tea and adjust your sugar as necessary. For the wine version, you'll need a bottle of non-alcoholic red wine of your choice. The wine you choose depends on your taste. If you like a sweeter, mellow wine, try a Merlot. If you have more of a dry preference, a Cabernet Sauvignon works well. I've written a round up of the best alcohol-free red wine too. Sugar free. A virgin mulled wine without alcohol (or Kinderpunsch recipe if you’re in Germany) is normally made by replacing red wine with fruit juice, such as cranberry or pomegranate. The use of hibiscus and rosehips herbal tea instead makes this a refined sugar free mulled wine recipe.
