About this deal

Prior to our founding, many of our staff worked in the thrift industry where we saw millions of books being sent to landfills each year.

of taxpayers hard-earned money, the construction projects undertaken for the 2012 London Olympics will breathe the inspiration of a new and a happier life into East London. If you want to see the capital’s oldest structures by far, then you have to be at Vauxhall at low tide. I was however absolutely appalled by the way it was packaged in what was no more than a two layer thick brown paper bag.

There’s the odd under-visited museum like the one at the end of Brunel the Elder’s Wondrous Tunnel (129), the first underwater tunnel, opened in 1843.I think it's great for anyone who loves London or its history, or perhaps as a gift for parents/grandparents who might have been born in London and would be fascinated to see some old photos of places they grew up walking by. The City churches where Oliver Cromwell was married and Samuel Richardson was buried are revealed as beams and shattered stonework pillars.

Enlarged and cropped, the photographs reveal the built environment and life within it in great detail. and have been lovingly arranged and captioned by Davies into this tremendous picture book for London architecture aficionados. This book is not an architectural textbook, this book is written for laypersons, you don't need to possess any advanced knowledge of architectural history or architectural styles to enjoy this book. We find a photo hanging on a wall from 1895, the great frozen River Thames, were amazed to hear frost fairs were held on the ice. The piece invites participants to question their routine journeys and examine their surroundings, the starting point being disused tube stations. It is liberally peppered with the most astonishing array of genuinely stunning 'pin sharp' photographs which naturally I have never had the opportunity of seeing before, illustrating not just the buildings but also many of the evocative street scenes of the period. Lost in London was favourably reviewed by Jason Solomons on BBC Radio 4's Front Row on 20 January 2017, [15] having previewed it the evening before. It will take me ages to read because I cannot just flick through it, every page needs to be looked at thoroughly as there are so many interesting things to see in each and every photo.
