About this deal

One service offering tariff integration is Intelligent Octopus, which delivers green electric vehicle charging through its next-generation platform. By providing six hours of cheap, green energy during off-peak hours (11.30 pm to 5.30 am) at a rate of 10p per kWh, users can charge their EVs more sustainably and affordably. The Intelligent Octopus app lets users set their charging preferences, so they are always in control of their energy usage. Most home chargers deliver the charging capacity of 3kW or 7kW. Some 22kW chargers can be installed, delivering a charge of around 40 miles in roughly an hour. Note that they require a three-phase supply, rather than the single-phase most UK residential homes are built with, and not all vehicles will accept that power delivery from a home supply.

As an added safety feature, the app will not allow charging to go live if your vehicle’s AMP (power) level is incorrect. While this can be annoying, it is for the client’s benefit; if the AMP setting is wrong, it can damage your electric vehicle’s battery! One workaround with the need for a Garo earthing device is to have the charger installed in a garage and only charge indoors. This way, the EO Mini Pro 2 will use the house earthing and not need a separate earthing device. However, you will only be able to charge indoors – charging outside with this setup is dangerous. Within the EO Mini Pro, there are different lights that indicate any faults that have been detected. If there is no earth connection, then two short red flashes will appear and if the natural and live conductors are revered, four short red flashes will show. All electricians will have their own equipment for testing, but it’s a helpful feature from EO.This then allows the charger to automatically read your solar panels power output and set the charging rate to match that of the solar panels. To ensure a constant charge your car will charge at a minimum rate, so if the solar energy output is not enough the charge will not constantly be turned off and on (which can cause damage to the car). With IP54 (IP66 on some models) certification, the precious mechanics of your charger will be protected from dust. It’s so robust that it even claims to operate in -25ºC conditions! The EO Mini Pro 2 is a tiny, inconspicuous ‘smart’ home charger available tethered or untethered, charging at speeds up to 7.2kW (single-phase). Worried that someone may plug into your new charger without your consent? You can add a RFID card reader so that only those who you give a tag to will be able to access your EO Mini Pro 3. A charge point with Smart Control enables your energy provider access to manage your car charge while simultaneously managing grid demand, so as to minimise network disruption and keep your costs low.

The optional solar charging feature is worth having if you have solar panels because it lets you charge your EV exclusively with solar power. With a small solar panel setup, you should be able to draw around 3.6kW or up to 7kW with a larger solar installation. Sadly, there’s no solar charging integration or colour choice. What’s more, the Ohme Home Pro is only offered on a tethered basis, and the open cabling means it looks a bit messy. While the Ohme Home requires an additional charge for a Garo earthing device, the Home Pro gets built-in grounding technology. The Ohme Home Pro isn’t as versatile as others, but its price (alongside that screen) makes it a worthy contender for those car brands that are supported.The white EO Mini Pro 2 blends in with white and light stone walls and is a better choice when situated next to white installations. Charging experience

While this feature may not be relevant if you currently don’t have solar panels it is a nice perk over some other charge points on the market, enabling further optimisation of the charging process.The EO Mini Pro 2 doesn’t have a physical control panel. Everything is controlled via the EO Smart Home app, available on iPhone and Android. Charging with the EO Mini Pro 2 is easy – plug it in, and your car starts charging automatically, providing you have set charging times in the smartphone app. We supply and install home EV chargers with the EO Mini Pro 3 being a frequently chosen option, Other options for home chargers include;

Zappi and Ohme are brands at the top of their game with the Zappi v1.2 and Ohme ePod and Home Pro. The Zappi has unbeatable solar and renewables integration, so if you have solar panels, it’s the best option. The Zappi v2.1 is also available as a tethered or untethered charger. The Ohme ePod and Home Pro have a kWh price cap feature so you never pay more for electricity than you want, and they also have better app, but don’t do solar. Overall, our top-rated charger is the Ohme ePod with the Zappi v2.1 behind it. Pod Point vs Ohme Smaller than a piece of A5 paper and equipped with simple LED status lights, the EO Mini Pro 2 is the most inconspicuous EV home charger on the market. It’s reliable, well-made, simple to use and gets the job done. However, solar is optional, the app is average, and installation requires an earthing device. The supply cable entry is created by drilling a 20mm or 25mm hole through the bottom of the enclosure. CT connections include an output for load management and one for output of solar array for solar charging.

The ability to remotely access and control the EV charger is a significant advantage for users, as it provides increased flexibility and convenience. With remote access, users can monitor their charger’s status, start or stop charging sessions, and adjust settings without being physically present at the charger. For instance, the Wallbox Eco-Smart Solar EV Charging system offers a user-friendly app with remote access and control features, making it easier for users to manage their solar-integrated EV charger in real-time. Some EV chargers offer energy management systems that allow you to charge your vehicle using only the green energy generated by your solar panels, or a mix of green and grid energy. For example, Wallbox provides Eco-Smart solar EV charging as a feature in their Pulsar Max and Copper SB models. This capability lets you choose between fully green or mixed charging modes, depending on your energy production and consumption at home.
