After all, this keyboard is worth it! The S90 is generously provisioned with factory settings; 384 Preset Voices and 48 Drum Kits, 128 General MIDI Voices and one GM drum kit, and for the user, 128 Voice and 16 Drum Kit memories (the latter are filled with factory settings when you take delivery of the S90, but can be overwritten at any time). Factory preset Voices are sensibly assigned to different categories on the S90 (for example 'Acoustic Piano', 'Keyboard', 'Synth Lead', 'Drum/Percussion' and so on), and this is a habit you should consider forming as you program your own Voices. The S90 has a sophisticated search facility that lumps similar Voices together, and clearly labelled buttons allow you to access and audition related Voices via the display. Hands-on time reveals that the Cynosa’s buttons are soft and light, but they’re fast and comfortable too, and easily good enough for mainstream gaming, from slow titles to esports games. Mechanical hardware is speedier, more robust and with more movement, but that’s not necessarily achievable at this price, and the Cynosa is still a good device. This is the exact style of keyboard I'm looking for, but unfortunately not the price I'm looking for. Otherwise, the K70 Core looks and feels good - I'm a big fan of the more refined yellow and triangular motifs that have appeared on recent Corsair releases, and that's reflected on the Core too with subtle details on the space bar and chassis. The aluminium case and 'floating' keycaps still look great, the magnetic soft-touch palm rest comes in handy and Corsair's iCUE software for setting custom lighting schemes or remapping keys remains one of the most powerful in the business. The only real shame is the non-detachable cable, which looks and feels cheap compared to the rest of the board.

There are 128 memories in which to save master-keyboard setups, though a Master Mode memory could be something as simple as just one Voice assigned to the whole keyboard. Used in this way, you can create your own little sub-set of the onboard Voice library for even easier access than when using the Category search option. keyboards are the most barebones keyboard available that you can still type on. The S90 is structured in the usual hierarchical fashion. Synthesis starts with an Element, which contains all the basics for electronic sound production: an oscillator with one of 1347 sampled waveforms at its heart, tuning and pitch-envelope parameters, a resonant filter (available in no fewer than 21 types) with filter envelope, level and pan controls, and an amplitude EG and LFO that can be routed to the pitch envelope, filter envelope and amplitude envelope. Up to four Elements make up an S90 Voice, and those Elements can be given their own key and velocity ranges, making for a mini 'Performance'. However, if you use more than one Element in a Voice, the total polyphony drops accordingly.

This standard structure becomes a little more complicated if you install one or more of Yamaha's optional PLG synth boards — the S90 can accommodate three — but only in that you'll have to become used to a given board's synth-editing system, and that an S90 Performance can include one Voice from each of up to three boards in addition to the four Voices sourced onboard (there's more on the PLG boards in the box above). Macro pads are quite interesting. These are typically custom made and require the parts to be sourced online through group buys. Macro pads allow you to program all the keys with macros to have shortcuts to make whatever you’re doing more efficient. These can be useful for streamers to change cameras with the push of a button or add a sound effect with ease. The current range is as follows: No other keyboard provides this level of customisation, and Razer’s system is great if you want more control. That’s true if you’re an esports fan, an MMO player or someone who wants to map loads of actions to your keys – or if you just want to tweak how the keyboard feels during everyday gaming and typing. There are downsides, though: the buttons still don’t provide the intuitive response and comfort of a proper gamepad, and this system is complicated. For some gamers a pad will still be better, and for many others it’ll just be overkill. So, while this hardware is revolutionary, it’s not always practical.

Of course, there's more to the keyboard than just a multi-function dial, and the K70 Core feels sanely designed throughout with many of the same 2023-era features like pre-lubed switches and sound dampening foam. Weirdly, we see another regional difference here, with superior double-shot keycaps for US boards and printed legend ABS keycaps elsewhere - presumably a play to keep costs down for relatively low-volume regions.
