About this deal

Nineteen year old Samuel lives with his mum, Lou, who waited patiently for Samuel to come home before the 8pm curfew but Samuel is a no show. CHRISTIAN WHITE'This grabbed me from the opening page and didn't let go' MICHAEL ROBOTHAM'The thrill and fear arrive early in Home Before Night and doesn't leave until the final pages. Opening with an outstandstanding prologue, this twist-filled, fast-paced mystery moves at a breathless speed. I didn’t see the twist coming at all which I loved, and I also loved the nods to all of his other novels and characters throughout as well. By completing your purchase, you agree to Audible's Conditions of Use and authorise Audible to charge your designated card or any other card on file.

Maybe I'm just thick, but I didn't get the twist at the end and can think of no plausible explanation for how it could have happened, so this left it feeling unfinished for me. With plenty of doubt cast on the characters combined with a number of possibilities raised for Samuel’s disappearance, the pressure builds to a crescendo in Home Before Night. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Lou has raised her son to be honest and has never before had to suspect him of harbouring secrets and lies. We move very quickly from uncovering the past to the conclusion so I didn’t feel as if I got to savour the ‘reveal’ and twists on offer.

But Lou as brought Samuel up to never lie (which is an underlying theme throughout this story), and now he's disappeared. But this is another great read from Pomare and the sneak peek at his next book (included in the paperback copy) will whet your appetite for his 2024 release. Her ex-husband is dismissive when she phones him, accusing her of being overbearing, among other things, but Lou is certain there is something wrong. The book is mainly from her perspective - a tortured look into her reality, her life beginning and seemingly revolving around Samuel. A story that was first released as an Audible exclusive, this latest Pomare offering is fast paced, incredibly twisted and oh so tense.

Those readers who are already familiar with Pomare’s work will know that he is a true master when it comes to plot twists, thanks to his well received back catalogue. I know we are still in the midst of the pandemic – as someone who only got it for the first time a month ago – but it was a bit surreal. With a few red herrings and unexpected twists, this is one engaging read that you won't want to put down. A woman races against time to find her son in this tense and twisty thriller by the Top Ten bestselling author of The Wrong Woman --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition. As the third wave of the virus hits, all inhabitants of Melbourne are given until 8pm to get to their homes.Set in Melbourne during Covid lockdown, unfortunately there weren’t really any likable characters in this book, but I did enjoy the twist which I didn’t see coming, which also helped to explain certain character traits. I feel picky for even mentioning it but I’m fairly sure we learn that Samuel is 19, but earlier in the novel there’s reference to him as a 10 year old, naming their (now) 11 year old kitten. Pomare builds the tension well as Lou, unable to reach her son as the lockdown comes into effect, begins to panic.

Her unhelpful ex-husband doesn’t believe her concerns but will they join forces and track him down together? There are lots of different twists in this mystery, thriller, my mind had all different thoughts trying to sort out what was happening, and the ending was not what I expected at all, a short story that I did in one sitting, it is fast paced and has lots happening in, characters that add to the story. Wherever they are when the curfew begins, they must live for four weeks and stay within five kilometres of. I noted a few authors were doing something similar – releasing audiobooks or even novellas in the form of ebooks.Samuel is growing up in a broken household, with dad Marko remarried and mum Lou bringing Samuel up on her own. I suppose if you live in Australia and we’re around during these awful times, it would be a good story for you. Being such a short length (only 189 pages) means that the tension ramped up quite quickly and had me racing through the pages. At just under 200 pages long, Home Before Night is a fast paced and entertaining read, but also much shorter than I expected, with the paperback padded with a 100 page preview of Pomare’s forthcoming novel, Seventeen Years Later, to be published in 2024.
