About this deal

A trailer for ‘The Snowman and the Snowdog’ is shown below. Could you make a trailer for ‘The Snowman’? The story is bookended by two small tragedies. Although they are not dwelled upon, sensitive children may find that sad. The art is very faithful to the original though this book has far more words than the original (I would have liked to see fewer words, actually, and to let the art speak more). Billy and his mum have moved into a new house, but Billy isn’t very full of Christmas cheer, as his beloved old dog has passed away. A boy moves into a new home and in his eagerness to explore, he discovers an old hat, a scarf, a shriveled tangerine and some coal hidden in his new room, along with a photo of a boy and a snowman. The boy builds his own snowman just like the one in the photo. For good measure, he adds a snowdog. The snow duo come to life in a magical adventure.

One winter’s night, a snowman comes to life and a magical adventure begins…’. Use this idea as the starting point for your own story. Using images culled from the hand-drawn animation of the short film, this sequel to The Snowman can stand alone. Briggs’ original book was wordless, and both films are without dialogue, but this title includes a story in traditional picture book style. While suitable, the text doesn’t always match the images; however, the illustrations are impressive. Coarse, earthy scenes, as well as dreamy, velvety visions create a delightful adventure. This is more of a winter book than a Christmas book, but I categorized it as Christmas because that's usually when we read books about snow as well. The story actually starts out pretty sad. I thought it was a bit heavy for a kids book. The little boy's dog he loved so much dies and he gets sad and depressed.
