About this deal

Finally, fill the pastry case with fruit mixture and bake for 15 minutes at 180C. What do you serve an Ecclefechan Tart with? The recipe is simple to make though it takes a while. The effort, though, is well worth the time taken as the tarts really taste so good. I watched a number of videos and read lots of recipes before deciding on mine. I used 140g of butter in the mix, when I intended to use just 115g. But adjusting the time for baking worked so well, making the tarts perfectly baked right through. So my recipe, below, shows that butter and the adjusted baking time.

For Local Government purposes, it belongs to the "Annandale East + Eskdale Ward" of the Dumfries and Galloway Council Area. The village does not have its own Parish Council. To make one large Ecclefechan Tart rather than 12 mini ones make these few simple tweaks to the recipe. The High Street of the village has a burn which runs through a culvert below it. This culvert was constructed in 1875 by Dr George Arnott at his own expense.

Ecclefechan Tart Pronounce They can be made in a bun tin, muffin tin - like mine, or even as a large tart in a quiche/tart tin - it's entirely up to you. I prefer the individual tarts, as they are easier to serve to your guests.

Chilling the dough is a crucial step, as the pastry does tend to shrink quite a bit in the oven - that's the case with all butter pastry though, and unless you bake it blind beforehand, you will end up will too little pastry. Serve it with some spiced caramelised apples and nice ice cream on the side to really bring out the flavours. Mixed dried fruit, sultanas, raisins, currants and mixed dried peel, is the main ingredient in the filling. The flavour combination works so well. Walnuts are added into the mix too and I also added some chopped glace cherries. That combination works so well for Christmas, which means that these little tarts would be a good alternative to mince pies. Butter tarts (pronounced “Ekel-fek-an” or simply “Ecclefechan”) are Scottish pastries made with melted butter, brown sugar, egg, walnuts, currants, and white vinegar, as well as apple cider vinegar.
