About this deal

Yet she carried on winning, beating men and – infamously – competing against her own daughter, whilst working full-time on a Yorkshire farm and running a household.

The previous book was William Fotheringham's The Greatest, which I said gave 'one of the most dominant cyclists of all time. Galer crafts a deeply moving account that lays bare Beryl’s remarkable life, showcasing her resilience and unwavering determination to pave the way for a more inclusive and just world. This book immerses the reader in Beryl Potter’s life and extraordinary story of personal transformation, ignited (for better or worse) by the effects of her limb amputations and vision loss.Dustin Galer’s organization of a vast array of rich material and his first-rate analysis conveys the life and times of controversial disability activist Beryl Potter with a familiarity and, at times, intimacy that will appeal to a wide audience. Beryl deserved for her story to be told in style and Jeremy Wilson achieves that while also charting the more controversial elements of her extraordinary life. Cyclist Beryl Burton dominated her sport much as her male contemporary Eddy Merckx, with a longevity that surpasses sporting legends like Muhammad Ali and Serena Williams. A wonderful biography of one of Britain's least known but most highly decorated sports stars, Yorkshire cyclist Beryl Burton.

The most engaging of the book, Fotheringham does a superb job of reconstructing the events behind the numbers. There are lessons here for us all, from school kids to politicians, about what it means to be truly complete, and what it will take to make inclusion a reality. Jeremy Wilson brings alive this extraordinary woman's achievements (and problems, too - she wasn't always the best mother) in this fabulous biography.Jeremy Wilson finds the human heart of a story that gets more extraordinary as a unique athlete recedes into history. Some of the data that are collected include the number of visitors, their source, and the pages they visit anonymously.

Shockingly neglected daughter and some bizarrely cruel parenting and sportsmanship, all for the results. Ruthless, relentless, brilliant, belligerent - and quite possibly the greatest Olympian Britain never had. TheDeorhord by Hana Videen is a fascinating collection of medieval creatures large and small, and a delightful dive into Old English. The later chapters of the book covering the period of Burton’s decline describe a person so consumed by cycling as to neglect every other element of her emotional life. Her rich, complicated life provides important insights into the strength and fortitude required to obtain the most basic disability rights. Yet she carried on winning, beating men and - infamously - competing against her own daughter, while working on a farm and running a household. His sports writing was again highly commended in 2021 at both the British Press Awards and the British Journalism Awards.
