Reviews "This is a gripping adventure story that offers something fresh and original to the middle grade historical fiction market. But when Papa Eze himself becomes ill, he knows it's time to reveal to Ada her true heritage - time for her to travel deep into the forest to discover the ancient Edo kingdom of Benin, and to use everything within her power to heal the terrible divisions that are tearing the kingdom apart. My favourite character is Papaeze because he can heal the sick like Jesus but the worst character is chief Ewe because he treats people very terribly. Shortlisted for the Historical Association's Young Quills Award 2021 for the best children's fiction.

Candy Gourlay introduces Wild Song, her companion novel to Bone Talk, in which Luki and Samkad leave their home in the Philippines for America. The plot was good because each chapter ended in a shocking way and the beginning of the new chapter gave me a sense of relief.Eze teaches Ada his knowledge and skill in the ways of the forest but she feels something is missing and wants to find out more about her ancestors. Ada has to go on an adventure with Mbe to find Ada’s twin brother and stop her father from trying to kill her. A clearer explanation of why the people Ada grew up with were attacked by the Edo people would have been useful, but there are some good historical notes at the end. It isn't a challenging read at all, but in conjunction with the notes at the end, is a fascinating introduction to a period of history about which little is known in the UK.
