Some people may get lucky and successfully grow cannabis without testing the pH of their water, but many growers using liquid nutrients who don’t test for pH will start seeing signs of nutrient deficiencies and other nutrient problems.

Once the clone has started really growing (usually after a couple of days) then you can put your lights closer and start feeding it with full-strength nutrients. There is no way to determine the gender of a plant initially, just by looking at the seeds, or even by looking at young plants.
