We’ve all seen pictures or videos of books from the dark ages that have ornate drawings, and stylized artistic renderings of plant vines, leaves, fruits, and other various things on the covers, spines, page edges, and on the pages themselves.

The novelty of having all of the art inside, and on the cover is nice, and many people will enjoy this embellishment. The practice of illumination (or adding decoration to manuscripts) dates back to the early fifth century and continued into the Middle Ages, when scribes, monks, and other artists used richly colored pigments as well as gold and silver leaf to add decoration, initials, and illustration to the pages of books and Bibles. The text appears to be line matched but with this thick of paper, it’s extremely hard to see anything more than a page or two deep to confirm that. Printed on thick, cream-colored paper, the Bible’s single-column text setting and wide margins provide generous space for additional notes, prayers, and designs—inviting readers to creatively engage with and reflect on the beauty of God’s Word. The outer box slides upward and it great for protecting the books while moving or storing them but I’m not always sure where to put it while I’m using the set. The text is laid out the same (just with a few gold highlights) and the pages are even numbered the same until you reach a full-page illustration. Throughout this book’s events, God makes it evident that he is in control and has ultimate authority over time, people, and events.
