The game is suggested for ages 12+, but we played with a second grader and a fifth grader with very few issues since the Goonies tend to work cooperatively. One player is the GM (Goondock Master) and has their own deck of cards which they can use to add more dangers to the map, slowing The Goonies’ progress and running out the clock (or hourglass in this case).
Yes, the key scenes are there as you would expect them to be but what you will be doing isn’t just recreating what they did on screen. Looking at, picking up, and exploring each item will unlock new dialogue to read, and sometimes, new rooms, items and mysteries to explore.Without spoiling anything specific (and since the miniatures that come with the game aren’t hidden information), the bosses include the Fratellis, a giant octopus, and the ghost of One-Eyed-Willie himself. Even with so closely following the plot of the movie, there is a ton of original Goonies content here. The game is set up well so that a GM can be as kind or evil as they want, or just keep the Goonies on their toes the entire game (which is the best in my opinion). While playing The Goonies Escape with One-Eyed Willy’s Rich Stuff, you don’t have to destroy, rip, fold or permanently mark anything.
You get a chance to live this story yourself in The Goonies: Never Say Die, a game for 2-5 players by Prospero Hall and published by Funko Games. By splitting the game over three different sessions we were better able to savour and enjoy the game, getting a more fulfilling experience. For anyone who has ever opened a secret envelope in a game like this will know the sheer joy this brings. Whenever the GM moves a Sand token to the bottom of the Hourglass, the Goonies may flip one Teenager card to face up again.The fact that it’s a game based off The Goonies too just makes this game a great game and I’m so happy to be able to say that this is an actual good game even without the name branding to boost it.
However, while we did have a lot of fun it wasn’t a perfect experience, due to some editing issues that had us completely stuck for a good amount of time. The cards come in assorted sizes but do a really good job of using style, size, and color to help keep track of which card is which. I already can’t wait for the expansion to drop and I’m really curious to see what Funko Games is going to roll out for us next.If you answered yes to both of these questions then Goonies Never Say Die may be the game you’ve been looking for. The Flex Cross Band size L, which is also included in the set, ensures more stability during storage and transport.
As a child of the 80’s, I grew up watching epic adventure movies like Indiana Jones, Willow, and Labyrinth. When a Goonie enters an unexplored room, the GM will setup the room, adding whatever tokens and foes are shown in the guide. In each adventure, the Goonies have an objective they will need to complete, but they might not know it to start! Chris was born in New York, raised in New Jersey, and now lives in Arizona with his gaming partner (who is incidentally his wife) and their two tiny gamers-in-training.I might lean more 12+ for the GM depending if the kid has had any GM type experience, but the player age has more wiggle room. But each team member can contribute something slightly different and it is key to get through any given situation. I’m not sure if this is a function or defect of the overall design, but I feel like it’s worth mentioning. The Goonies see what Dice to roll on their Goonie Placards, the GM uses Boss Foe Placards or Foe Reference Cards. Obviously, the specific powers and artwork contribute to that, but I found the light gameplay and pseudo-danger of the secretive GM to underscore exactly the feelings that the movie was meant to evoke.
