About this deal

These ladies were thick as thieves for 20+ years, but she doesn’t dish on Houston’s worst behaviors, and she doesn’t even bash Bobby Brown very much, which would have been easy to do, because Bobby Brown is an absolute piece of garbage. Meanwhile, Crawford was harangued, marginalised, and allegedly threatened with violence by the singer’s family.

I kept feeling she was going to come, and I told Lisa, ‘When Whitney comes to our door, that door has to open. Crawford and Houston shared a few more moments of connection after the author quit the business of Nippy, but they were increasingly far between. A Song for You describes the understandable challenges of working for your former lover: Crawford was devastated when Houston, with whom she shared an apartment, took up with Jermaine Jackson. Once a year or so, I fall down a serious Whitney Houston rabbit hole: rare tracks, YouTube videos, documentaries, articles… so reading Robyn Crawford’s memoir was a no-brainer. The people that ultimately loved and had her best interest at heart were tossed aside as she spiraled down.Had Houston not been in the spotlight, her teenage romance with Crawford would probably have fizzled out anyway, leaving them free to continue on comfortably as friends. For years, Houston and Crawford effectively functioned as a couple, living together, occasionally (and chastely) sharing a bed, and remaining emotionally close.

However, it would be a 4 if I based it on the sincerity I felt that she was giving us that we have not seen in previous books and documentaries about Whitney’s life. If you read that book, you can figure how things were really going that time, Robyn went through a lot, and she is sharing a part of her life with It. I'm a Whitney Houston fan and it pained me to see her in the state she was in during her final years, particularly in the early 00's. She was there for Houston's "Star-Spangled Banner" at the 1991 Super Bowl, perhaps the all-time most acclaimed performance of our national anthem — and it was Crawford who suggested that Houston take the field in a white track suit.If "they" had let Whitney be open about her relationship with Robyn, then maybe a huge message would have got through and gone some way to stamping out homophobia. Houston told Time magazine, wounding her friend with the offensive intimation that homosexuality was akin to bestiality. A monthly update with a note from Jay, a roundup of recent reviews, previews of upcoming books, and more. I think she slapped my face because she felt that I had done something, and she wanted me to know that I’d earned that slap.

After giving it time to sink in, I realize the reason I was so conflicted was because this book is not so much about Whitney Houston, as it is about Robyn Crawford. This honestly to me is the most real, raw, and honest version of Whitney Houston that I have read since her death.

The houstons were beyond toxic even pre fame and they trivialised the drug problems in their family. This is Robyn’s story and it’s not a tell all but rather the life of Whitney Houston from her unique perspective.
