Update: I revisited the CD from the main Minna textbook and it is a regular audio CD, so the 5 CD set must contain additional material. Es un buen libro y al ser todo en japonés con Katakana, Kanji, Hiragana con Furigana te ayuda bastante a mejorar el hábito de la lectura de los caracteres, haciendo que con el tiempo distingas mejor y por consiguiente leas más rápido. That being said if you’re going to go down the MNN route the workbooks are a must, as in all of them! The content is nearly the same and when you add the additional workbook to Genki you have a ton, really a ton of content you can practice with.Those workbooks that start from the very beginning and gradually go up are really helpful to train listening. Thankfully (probably due to student attrition), the offerings for the intermediate levels are somewhat less profuse.

The book is structured so the learner first studies via kanji sheets, followed by reading practice and then writing practice, allowing for steady progression. So if you’re looking for a good Japanese language textbook series, be sure to check out Minna no Nihongo. Since it was first published in 1998, Minna no Nihongo has been a long-selling and classic textbook for both teachers and learners of Japanese alike. However, for all those who don't, get to learn the basic japanese alphabets beforehand - this book has them at the beginning, but not the translation of the sounds in rōmaji (latin letters) nor the sound of each character. And because I think the self-learning market for Japanese is huge in comparison to other languages (at least that’s how I feel) a CD with spoken dialogues is an absolute must.
