GameSpot gave the PSP version of the game 8/10, praising the polished visuals and audio, the level designer and the online sharing feature. its a welcome trip down memory lane for older players, and a fresh exciting challenge for new ones, "lets go. Command them to dig tunnels, build steps, stop traffic and climb walls so that they can escape each perplexing level.

The PS3 version received a slightly lower score because of it missing the level editor and level sharing of the PSP version.The PSP version holds a Metacritic score of 76/100 based on 46 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".

The music is almost entirely the same across all 3 releases, but the track known as "Lemming 1" is somewhat different in the PS2 release. Save the Lemmings in 150+ levels of frenetic bashing, digging, building, climbing, mining and bombing! The original PSP version features all new graphics and sound, a couple new control features, a custom level editor (which originally allowed users to upload levels for others to play), and 36 new levels on top of the original 120. The game has been released in slightly different versions for PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3. Aside from the obvious graphics and sound updates, the game allows you to zoom into the level to better discern what the lemmings are doing on the small screen.

User levels could be constructed from pre-rendered objects and distributed by uploading them to a PlayStation-specific Lemmings online community.
