About this deal

Dr May Doris CharityTaylor (16 September 1914 – 4 January 1998) was a medical doctor and prison administrator. She was appointed assistant medical officer at Holloway in 1942, later becoming medical officer. In 1945, she was appointed the first woman Governor of Holloway Prison and the first woman prison governor in the United Kingdom. Ruth's son Andy, who was aged 10 at the time of his mother's execution, took his life in a bedsit in 1982 shortly after desecrating her grave. The trial judge, Sir Cecil Havers, had sent money every year for Andy's upkeep, and Christmas Humphreys, the prosecution counsel at Ruth's trial, paid for his funeral. [5] Her daughter Georgina, who was aged 3 when her mother was executed, was fostered when her father killed himself three years later. She died of cancer in 2001 at age 50. A prison officer who had sat in on the interview confirmed Mishcon's account but added that Ellis had said she asked Cussen for the gun, a detail that was to prove crucial to the Home Secretary's decision to let her hang. The authorities considered prosecuting Cussen, who later died in Australia, as an accessory, but decided it would be impossible without Ellis as a witness. On 1 July 1955, the Daily Mirror had another advertisement about another episode in their exclusive “Ruth Ellis continues her story – My Love and Hate” series. This time the quote was “That lie took the heaven out of my happiness.”Ruth Ellis, with the gun still in her hand, was detained by an off-duty policeman who had come out of the public house. Ellis’ devastating fate left a legacy that has ricocheted and re-emerged in the history books ever since. On 23 June 1955, the Home Office announced that the execution of Ruth Ellis had been arranged for 13 July 1955, at Holloway prison, London. According to the Daily Mirror newspaper (23 June 1955), Ruth Ellis spent her time in the condemned cell cheering up the women prison officers who had to guard her day and night.

Eight months previously, “Cassandra” did not feel the need to make a similar plea when another lady, Styllou Christofi, was executed at Holloway.

Ruth's case caused widespread controversy at the time, evoking exceptionally intense press and public interest to the point that it was discussed by the Cabinet. [25] Then- Prime Minister Anthony Eden made no reference to the case in his memoirs, nor is there any mention in his papers. He accepted that the decision was the responsibility of the Home Secretary, but there are indications that he was troubled by it. [26] A petition to the Home Office asking for clemency was signed by 50,000 people, but was rejected. The Sunday Dispatch newspaper, 17 July 1955, had a photograph of Ellis’ mother laying a bunch of carnations on David Blakely’s grave. She explained that it was Ruth Ellis’ last wish that pink, white and blood red carnations were laid on Blakely’s grave. The bouquet was the same type that Ruth had received from Blakely. We have to question whether this exercise of considering an appeal so long after the event when Mrs Ellis herself had consciously and deliberately chosen not to appeal at the time is a sensible use of the limited resources of the Court of Appeal. In any view, Mrs Ellis had committed a serious criminal offence. This case is, therefore, quite different from a case like Hanratty [2002] 2 Cr App R 30 where the issue was whether a wholly innocent person had been convicted of murder. A wrong on that scale, if it had occurred, might even today be a matter of general public concern, but in this case, there was no question that Mrs Ellis was other than the killer and the only issue was the precise crime of which she was guilty. If we had not been obliged to consider her case we would perhaps in the time available have dealt with 8 to 12 other cases, the majority of which would have involved people who were said to be wrongly in custody.
