Ski or hike below the Matterhorn Planning tip : Lucerne makes an appealing base for exploring the lake, with its Old Town, medieval wooden bridge and promenade strung along the lakeshore. 6. Take the Eiger Express to Jungfraujoch

Even if you don’t cycle the Rehberger-Weg you should still visit Foundation Beyeler. One of our favorite museums in Basel was the Contemporary Art Museum of Foundation Beyeler. Foundation Beyeler is situated on a beautiful property that contains the private collection of Hildy and Ernst Beyeler. As you can see, Basel Switzerland is an amazing city to visit. Once you dig deeper beyond the cathedral and exploring the old town there are so many things to see and do, you will fall in love with Basel too. I do feel constrained to point out that some of the photos in the article don’t match the subject. The one labeled the Basel Munster Cathedral is not the Munster Cathedral. The next picture down, the red building with the twin spires, is. Under that photo, the city hall (Rathaus) at Marktplatz is mentioned, but not shown, which is surprising because it’s a spectacular building. Basel has much to offer. I’ve lived there a number of years and still haven’t explored all its nooks and crannies. The museums alone would take quite awhile.

Your day swimming in the Rhine

No country nails rail travel like the Swiss, where little red trains (polished and perfectly on time) chug from valley to peak with ease, leaving you to swoon over the Alpine scenery from the comfort of your panoramic carriage. Evoking a golden age of travel, Switzerland’s train journeys are hands down some of the world’s finest.

Museum-wise, Bern is a treat. Tour the apartment where Einstein lived and the magnificent Kunstmuseum , showing fine arts from Renaissance masterpieces to Monets and Picassos. Make the short hop out to Renzo Piano’s architecturally bold, wave-like Zentrum Paul Klee , presenting the color-charged works of Swiss-born German artist Paul Klee. There are higher mountains in Switzerland than those lining the fjord-like shores of Lake Lucerne , but none are more enshrined in flag-waving Swiss myth. Boat across the emerald waters of Lake Uri, and you’ll glimpse Rütli Meadow, the hallowed birthplace of the Swiss Confederation in 1291. You can also experience the Tellskapelle , a tiny frescoed chapel that is said to be where the apple-shooting hero and beloved Swiss rebel William Tell escaped from the boat of his Hapsburg captor, Gessler. There’s nowhere like Europe at Christmas time and Basel is no exception. The city’s Christmas market, the oldest in the country, is suitably located in the old town’s most picturesque square at Barfusserplatz and Munsterplazt and typically features close to 200 booths exhibiting goods from craft and culinary artisans from around the Basel region. Christmas tours and events also take place and visitors can engage in a local tradition by signing the Basel Wish Book at the town hall. This year, the market starts tomorrow (Nov. 25) and continues until Dec. 23. We toured the Roman ruins at Augusta Raurica not that long ago, and while it’s definitely worth a visit, I don’t recall a wall with arrow slits and a panoramic view. (Could be wrong about that one, though.) ReplyTo use, simply dump all your gear inside the main compartment the way you would any regular dry bag. If you don’t want to walk around with a balloon-like bag, then use it like a tote with the top left open while you carry it to the water. Before hitting the water, though, you’re going to want to prepare the bag to float, at which point you’re supposed to let air in, then roll up the tail of the bag seven times to seal it. From there, your dry bag has transformed into a functional float that should stay on the water’s surface the entire time. The Swim City exhibition at the Swiss Architecture Museum until 29 September is a celebration of bathing culture in cities across the world and a look at how swimming in cities could look in the future. Exhibits include the Thames Bath: a floating river pool on the river in central London and +POOL – a development that would allow New Yorkers to swim in the Hudson River. Planning tip: Reaching the glacier is part of the fun. From Fiesch, take the cable car up to Fiescheralp, then beyond to Eggishorn for your first glimpse of the mighty Aletsch. 12. Walk among vines in Lavaux

At the point where Switzerland, Germany and France converge in the north, Basel dives into creative waters when it comes to avant-garde art and architecture, with a raft of galleries right up there with Europe’s best. But this city also likes to let its mind drift.
