About this deal

A production to satisfy Sydney's darkest imaginings: Sydney Theatre Company's Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde While Hyde is not as complex as Frankenstein’s monster – a character driven mad by isolation and the prejudice of others, but capable of love and empathy – both texts force us to question whether the monsters are really to blame for their crimes, or whether we should be pointing the finger at their irresponsible creators? More broadly, they force us to question whether society’s monsters (murderers and other villains) are born “evil”, or if their antisocial behaviour is created by outside forces. MR HYDE'S CRAVAT: Fold over the short and non-pointed end of the remaining single piece of fabric to make a seam which will have the strength to support the press studs. Stevenson explains he based the story on “that strong sense of man’s double being which must at times come in upon and overwhelm the mind of every thinking creature”. Although the book is only ten chapters long, it engages with complex questions about moral conflict, or the internal battle between our carnal – not always honourable – desires and our ethical responsibilities.

Just a few occasions when the 'busyness' of the numbers distracted from diction and on a very few occasions, pitching. But there was a raw energy throughout the show which captured both the spirit of the songs and our undivided attention. A complete scene-by-scenedescription of all the costumes needed for each of the characters in the show. Jenny Walser brought a compelling performance of Florence Monroe – the modern link piece and the central character in Act 2. Her character was excellent throughout and her treatment of Douglas Wood’s DC Lawrence was totally engaging. Physically furry and energised by primal impulses, he’s represented as more animal than human. His hands are covered in “swart” hair; he bares and gnashes his teeth when enraged, and physically treads over his victims like a stampeding beast. Kristy has a powerful voice which you used to perfection in your songs, and your interaction with Henry Jekyll was so real that we could believe in your character and the emotion you showed in your singing and acting was confident, this was a natural performance.Doctor Henry Jekyll is a good man. Successful within his field and respected by his peers, he’s close to a neurological discovery that will change the face of medical science forever. However, his methods are less than ethical, and when a close friend and colleague threatens to expose and destroy his work, Jekyll is forced to experiment on himself, whereupon something goes very wrong…or very right. And suddenly Jekyll has a new friend, the brutal Edward Hyde. As the dress shirt has no buttons then I am adding some half pearls that I'm sure will suit Mr Hyde. Careful examination tells us that it is, in fact, both – a mesmerising horror story and a stylistically complex work that meditates on social issues as diverse as moral philosophy, the dangers of drug use, and the repressive codes of Victorian society, to name a few. The 1996 film Mary Reilly introduces a central woman character, played by Julia Roberts, to Stevenson’s story. DR JEKYLL'S CRAVAT: Pin two of the fabric pieces together with the best or 'right' sides innermost and machine-sew around both the longer sides leaving the short side open. Tie off the threads and then turn the fabric inside out and using an iron press into shape. Turn under a hem of ½" or 1cm on each of the non-sewn edges and then sew this up on the machine and tie off the threads.

From your colourful costumes which helped to create the characters, you all blended well together and have clear singing voices and good movement, you were the ladies of the night always in character at all times. Good stage presence and you lit up the stage, we could believe that you were truly the roles that you created. Well done. It will be pretty amazing if both sides of your waistcoats line up on the button holes, so be prepared to sew on a new set of buttons - this also gives you the opportunity to make the Mr Hyde waistcoat all the more spectacular. There was an infectious sense of enjoyment from you all - you oozed commitment and enthusiasm. Lovely cameo from the respectful yet hesitant Poole and a very memorable portrayal of Spider - your hatred of women and love of yourself was very evident. Hyde’s vicious, almost feral side is most pronounced in the scene where he beats an old man who stops him in the street and politely asks for directions: An evocative tale of two men – one, a doctor, passionate and romantic; the other, a terrifying madman – and two women – one, beautiful and trusting; the other, beautiful and trusting only herself– both women in love with the same man and both unaware of his dark secret. A devoted man of science, Dr. Henry Jekyll is driven to find a chemical breakthrough that can solve some of mankind's most challenging medical dilemmas. Rebuffed by the powers that be, he decides to make himself the subject of his own experimental treatments, accidentally unleashing his inner demons along with the man that the world would come to know as Mr. Hyde. Both small roles but again central to the story. Jake as the pimp had created a believable role, you looked and acted the role so well that we could believe in your role and you interacted well with Lucy and the other members of the cast, well done.

Joseph Church kept a tight rein on the orchestra and because of this we were able to hear the soloists perfectly. The cast had obviously been worked hard and this showed on the balance of voices and the harmonies. Mr Hyde has no collar and his frayed-topped shirt will show below the level of the cravat. THE WAISTCOAT For Jekyll and Hyde, I felt that a deep, dark rich palette of colour built up with varying texture would best suit the mood of the show. Therefore I chose mostly dark colours which absorb the light, and at some points during the play use light-catching fabrics to draw focus on Eleanor’s poignant scenes. The names Jekyll and Hyde have been integrated into our everyday language. Even those unfamiliar with the book (and its many adaptations and riffs) know that “Jekyll-Hyde” means twinned good and evil, or the split personality. According to Urban Dictionary, “Jekyll-Hyde” is a colloquialism for someone whose erratic behaviour makes them seem like two different people. That is all the story though and not the production; so what of the challenging bar that this company set itself? As with Othello the night before, the production was impressive. Two very wordy pieces of theatre were executed with precision and a quality that would challenge many professional productions I have seen. The cast were, again, excellent – from the ensemble members through to the leading characters. There were plenty of laughs – the comedy of the piece was well executed throughout, but also lots of thought-provoking moments. Particular credit (in relation to the former) should be given to Mohammed Mansaray’s priest, Rosella Doda’s Abbie/Lucy and the trio of “ladies” played by Leah Gaffey, Amarah Jae St. Aubyn and Rebecca Hesketh-Smith who delivered the comedy with goodtiming and plenty of humour. Very strong posture and some lovely facial reaction during the Board scene - I loved your spiteful smirks. Just be careful to maintain balance of play in your vocal delivery. Louise has a beautiful clear speaking and singing voice, and this came over in your many songs and your interaction with Jekyll/Hyde. You looked the perfect part in your costume and we could believe in the strong-willed character that you portrayed, we could feel the emotion between you and Dr Jekyll, we could see that you would be by his side through all the problems that he had. This was an excellent performance. Very disciplined supportive playing from the orchestra - balance between singers and musicians was very good. The textured score was well performed and instrumentalists captured the atmosphere of the music in key moments so very well - for instance the string accompaniment as Jekyll/Hyde writhed in conflict. Following our sell-out 2017/18 tour, we're delighted to announce the revival of our highly acclaimed production, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde, coming to theatres across the UK until May 2022.

Information on Individual Makeup Kits from both Ben Nye and Mehron as well as character-specific makeup. Well done to stage designer Matthew Jeanes, who created a simple but effective set, with two sets of steps leading to a central upper level, all scene changes were carried out quietly and smoothly taking us from London Streets to Dr Jekyll’s laboratory, Office, Lucy’s Apartment and the Red Rat Public House. By the end of the evening I could not write. It was so painful and unsettling to watch Jekyll's final, tortuous demise. I have never felt that way before at the end of a Rose Bowl Adjudication. In The Simpsons, Bart exhibits ‘some monsterism’ after drinking an experimental cola – a reference to Jekyll and Hyde. Charlie had created some simple but effective routines which looked effective which the cast handled with ease. Well doneMr. Hyde is described in the novella as being short and extremely ugly. You can let your imagination go and make your Mr. Hyde costume as monstrous as you like. Mr. Hyde broke out of all bounds and clubbed him to the earth. And, next moment, with ape-like fury, he was trampling his victim under foot, and hailing down a storm of blows, under which the bones were audibly shattered and the body jumped upon the roadway. Notes on any Special Requirements andhelpful hintson various shows, e.g., stilts for “Barnum” or flying harness for “Peter Pan.”
