About this deal

Nicola is a composer/sound designer for stage and screen. She moved to London six years ago from Hong Kong to pursue a music career and has since worked across a variety of shows in the capacities of composer/sound designer, musical director and performer. Her work has been nominated for the Off West End Theatre Awards (Sound Design), and as a percussionist she has performed at the Royal Albert Hall, the Royal Festival Hall and the Shakespeare’s Globe. She also occasionally plays for Six the Musical (West End) as MD/Keys 1 and is a former cast member in STOMP! (West End/World Tour). Deadline’s previous run-downs of rising British writers have all featured the top-voted script from the Brit List. This year is no different. It probably won’t ever fully go away but, as my husband said, we used to live from one panic to another, but the therapy and the tablets just stabilise things and prevent me from reaching crisis point.

As I got more and more poorly with my second child however, it grew increasingly difficult to tell where exactly the thoughts were coming from and, truly scary to admit they might be manifesting inside my own brain. With my first child, I had awful thoughts thinking I might hurt my baby. It became so bad that I couldn’t bathe her and I didn’t want to change her nappy. I was petrified of being alone with her so I was always taking her to the library, to playgroups, to parties, like Maia does in the film, just to be around other people. It was exhausting. The play was inspired by her Nan who was diagnosed with dementia eleven years ago and is now in a care home. It was part of the Kali showcase last year.

Gemma's business plans thwarted?

The Old Vic and Shoreditch Town Hall announce this year’s The Old Vic 12 – a group of writers, producers, directors and creatives who, since March, have been working together digitally and in person, in line with social distancing, to create three new pieces of work. A couple of weeks later I was delighted to hear I’d gained a place on the programme, along with eleven other writers from across the UK. Nessah: There are elements of my experience that were almost psychotic, like the mirror stuff that I showed Maia experiencing in the film. There were mini hallucinations that I started to develop, and it’s difficult to unravel whether they were indeed hallucinations or just really strong intrusive thoughts. As a child, I spent time around adults experiencing psychosis so I had personal experience of it to draw upon as well. Your produced credit does not necessarily have to be for television for you to be eligible for this opportunity.

She studied Theatre at the Central School of Speech and Drama and then undertook a Masters in playwrighting at Birmingham University. Throughout the programme, there had always been an atmosphere of camaraderie amongst all the writers, but here it was felt more than ever. Observations and questions were offered in a genuine and supportive way. Whilst the programme has officially ended for this cohort, it’s not really goodbye... for me there’s still another draft to do and from there who knows...For theatre Nessah is currently under commission to: the Actors Touring Company (ATC); National Youth Theatre (NYT); Fuel; Boundless Theatre; Kiln Theatre; Almeida Theatre; English Touring Theatre (ETT); and a member of the Old Vic 12.

Eddie Marsan as Uther, High King of all Dumnonia. Old and battle-tested, he commands incredible authority, over almost all, bar Merlin. [5] Thomas Eccleshare's Instructions for Correct Assembly, recently seen at the Royal Court, found a grieving couple wiring up a surrogate son. American playwright Zoe Kazan examined computerised companionship in After the Blast. Nessah Muthy goes one further in this collection of playlets, as a string of sexbots screw their owners in more ways than one. Theatre is his “first love” and the setting for the second act of his career. His Bush Theatre stage show Red Pitch tells the story of three football-mad teenagers coming to terms with gentrification in their neighbourhood. It has hoovered up awards, including clinching Williams the most promising playwright prize at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards. It’s not an easy play to watch and is very harrowing at times, but dementia is something we are all going to have to face up in our lives – directly or indirectly.

If you want new stories, if you want new audiences, then you’ve got to invest in companies like Kali and then they in turn invest in writers and stories.” Nessah’s co-written 4 part thriller for Channel 5/Story Films has recently wrapped along with her episode of Grantchester (Series 9) for ITV/Kudos. Simon Merrells as Gundleus, king of the Dumnonia's rival kingdom Siluria and one of Mordred's three protectors. Imposing and savage, Gundleus is prepared to slaughter whoever he needs to secure power. [5] After plying her trade and gaining valuable experience in writers’ rooms for several high-profi le series, Nessah Muthy has secured her own show with Channel 5 and Story Films,The Hunted.

She said she had a staunchly working class upbringing, and “all I can write is working class women. My theatrical drama education was Eastenders’ and I was taken to panto.” probably one of the most sensitive portrayals of dementia seen on stage. It doesn’t tiptoe around it, but it never seems to take advantage of it either…. a lovely, emotive piece of theatre.’

YARD GAL | Rebecca Prichard (Ovalhouse) * winner Fringe Report Awards for Best Fringe Production 2009 I compare it to Greek mythology,” she explains. “You meet a character at the beginning of what’s going to be a really difficult journey.
