About this deal

In 1996, John Grado discussed why he started using mahogany for the cups on the Grado Reference Series One headphone. “The idea of using wood just came to me one night,” explained John Grado. “We went through quite a few species of wood before finding this mahogany—which type, we’ll just keep our secret for the moment. When you’re building speakers, you’re supposed to want a dense, really hard wood—well, that’s not mahogany. But it works really well—I don’t always spend a lot of time figuring out why something works; sometimes I’m just satisfied that it does. Maybe the mahogany has a lower resonant frequency, or maybe its resonance just doesn’t emphasize something in my driver—I’m not saying it would work in all cases, but it seems to work well with our driver.” So what species of wood sounds the best? Please note that our couriers will try to deliver as arranged but we will not be held responsible for any costs incurred because of non-delivery or factors introduced by third-parties. Replacing the driver with a non-Grado offering has the greatest influence on the sound and character of the headphone. Popular aftermarket driver manufacturers include Symphones, Nhoord Audio and Elleven Acoustica. Symphones v8 replacement drivers 2. Shape, size and material of the ear pads AB31, AB32, AB33, AB34, AB35, AB36, AB37, AB38, AB41, AB42, AB43, AB44, AB45, AB46, AB47, AB48, AB49, AB50, AB51, AB52, AB53, AB54, AB55, AB56These are lively headphones with excellent midrange and treble detail, as well as swift, deep bass for a pair of this size and style. The SR80x headphones are where the Grado Prestige series began. Stepping up on the SR60x model, the SR80x features de-stressed drivers for a broader and more open sound. The style has stayed the same since 1991, making these headphones a true icon of headphone design.

For full extension, you need the G Cush salad bowls, but they distance the ear from the driver to such a degree that bass is lost, probably because of the porous side rims. What you end up with is too shrill for everything below a GS-1000. That’s where venting the drivers helps balance things out. With fully vented drivers, you can pop a pair of salad bowls on and get a very nice combo of airy treble-happy Grados with great thump.Generation Grado drivers are here. Specifically tuned for the SR80x, this new speaker design features a more powerful magnetic circuit, a voice coil with decreased effective mass, and a reconfigured diaphragm. Reengineering these components for our 44mm drivers improve efficiency, reduces distortion, and preserves the harmonic integrity of your music. Unfortunately, our Installation Service excludes all gas appliances. It is the customer’s responsibility to find a gas safe engineer to connect the appliance. Any work conducted by a third part gas safe engineer will be at the customer’s expense and we will not accept any liability for their work. Prices valid in stores (all including VAT) until close of business on 2nd November 2023. (Some of these web prices are cheaper than in-store, so please mention that you've seen these offers online.) During our fortnight with the SR80x, we plug them into a Samsung Galaxy S21 phone (via a USB-C-to-3.5mm adapter), the iFi Zen DAC connected to an Apple MacBook Pro laptop, an Astell & Kern A&norma SR15 music player and Naim’s Uniti Atom streaming system, and the Grados never feel poorly driven or out of their depth with the more sophisticated electronics in that list. The SR80x might be considered budget headphones, but their class-leading transparency means they can satisfyingly participate in a more sophisticated set-up. Neither headphone is difficult to drive but they do benefit from a Dongle DAC or dedicated desktop headphone amplifier like the Schiit Audio Magni 3+ or iFi Zen CAN Signature.

The Helm Audio Bolt is my daily driver with my iPhone and both headphones really liked the control and midrange warmth that the tiny Dongle DAC can deliver. The HiFiMan HE400se has better resolution than the SR80x, and definitely reproduces a much larger sounding soundstage. The SR80x had more bite but it wasn’t as refined sounding; texture and decay were definitely the strong suit of the HE400se with this particular recording.A great DIY headphone build is not simply about function and utility. It should combine style, performance, and luxury. The products pictured in this article make beauty a priority and have infused art into supremely functional objects. With Shipibo Audio’s creations married to the superb sounding Symphones V8 drivers, you have a wearable work of art, with a refined sound quality to rival or better any of Grado’s best. Grado speakers can reveal new notes and details in songs heard hundreds of times. The driver and housing working in tandem react to sound vibrations and virtually eliminate transient distortions. The full bodied vocals and excellent dynamics compliment the musical characteristics that are brought to light through the extreme clarity and wide range of the SR80x. I went through a big modding phase a long, long time ago and stumbled onto some cool tweaks. Many of the mods I and others tried, were just blue smoke and mirrors. Like a lot of headphonia, they were winner-take-all b.s. grounded in enthusiasm, ego and marketing.

If you ever have the chance to try Beautiful Audio’s merino wool or leather ear cushions (with replaceable foam inserts of differing densities) I suggest them. Allows for a lot of customization of the sound and comfort. The SR80x have a comfortable, warm high end. They’re unmistakably on the brighter side, but avoid any harshness in this area with how silky and smooth they are. Their detail and accuracy in the highs is the first piece of their impressively articulate, crisp sound. They’re not overly-snappy in the high end, further contributing to their more liquid treble. If you want a very clean, modern high-end with some vintage warmth, the SR80x hits the nail on the head. Neben dem Grado SR80x haben wir viele weitere Hifi-Kopfhörer getestet, die wir dir in unserer Bestenliste zusammengetragen haben. Along with the speakers, the cables and headband have been redesigned for the SR80x. Now housed in a more durable exterior, the 4-conductor cable features a super annealed copper wire for improved purity of the audio signal. The new headband features more cushion for a comfier experience. The second camp is the “ tone wood” supporter. Much like a musical instrument, a particular material is selected for its interaction with the driver, in an effort to find a positive synergy, where the final sound produced is greater than the sum of its individual parts. Resonance and reflection of materials are believed to affect the timbre of the music reproduction.Your article helped me remain focused on the singular reason I started looking into Grado modding – the sound. Ultimately I spent a couple hundred dollars less in doing so and reached my objective sooner than expected When you’ve worn a particular brand of headphones for that many years, you know what to expect from a comfort perspective and these are dramatically better. A Prayer for Lester Bowie by David Sanford Big Band was one of my top jazz releases of 2021 and a glorious recording to really test the SR80x and compare them to my budget favorite, HiFiMan HE400se headphones. I had the first version of the PS1000, which I sold because I was getting an almost identical presentation from my modded SR60s – and because, to compensate for the pad-induced shrillness, Grado added a touch of darkness to the drivers, making violins sound a little too husky for my blood. A violin should sound like a violin, not a viola and not a cello at it’s highest register.
