About this deal

Modern detectives seem always to come hard-boiled and violent, getting involved in a very hands-on manner in cases. Apart from that, there is also romance, some literature, art and philosophy - some very interesting stuff that sometimes I would put the book down and start looking up some of the stuff she talks about in the book.

Furthermore, a suspect with Church connections would have made a very worthwhile and entertaining addition to the mix of potential wrong-doers (and motives), an opportunity lost through bad preparation. This is a great second installment of this series and I am enjoying the character development and the continued exploration of Aix. The investigation is headed by Verlaque, a judge who maintains good relations with the men he works with as well as benefiting from the helping hand of his girlfriend, Marine Bonnet, a law professor. And as a personal peeve, this book makes sure on several occasions to assure us that the main female character is beautiful. Will Judge Antoine Verlaque, his on again/off again lady friend law professor Marine Bonnet and Commissioner Bruno Paulik of the Aix police unravel these mysteries? Interesting if you've visited Cluny) Also some interaction with Italian police comes in at the end, with an excuse to discuss Italian religious art. So why the blazes does the text include various bits of random French , such as bonjour or merci, etc, basic 4th grade French words that everyone understands?

Longworth's entertaining second mystery set in Aix-en-Provence (after 2011's Death at the Ch teau Bremont) plunges magistrate Antoine Verlaque and his law professor girlfriend, Marine Bonnet, into the world of academe following a murder. One can only assume that she loves her adopted home from the warm descriptions of places and food included in her story. Death at the Château Bremont is replete with romance, mystery, and a rich atmosphere that makes the south of France spring off the page in a manner reminiscent of Donna Leon’s Venice. The two could not be any more different, but both turned out to be entirely delightful vacation reads, this one especially so. Doordat ik al wat moeite had met dit verhaal en het boek eerder aan de kant wilde leggen, helpt het ook niet als de hoofdstukken lang zijn.

This mystery will be a breath of fresh burgundy for those who miss the old days and the classic detectives. Alongside Roger Allam, The Crown actress Nancy Carrol plays Marine Bonnet, Antoine’s romantic interest in the show.

Georges Moutte, the chair of the theology department at the University d’Aix, who was about to retire. Another tedious repetition was the author showing off her knowledge of Aix, providing detailed steet-by-street, turn-by-turn routes various people walk through the city (sometimes including non-existent street names for no apparent reason).Apart from probing the rivalries among the university's faculty, Verlaque also looks into the possibility that the killer was an art thief. The Verlaque and Bonnet Provencal mystery series is fast becoming one of my favorites for fun, escapist reads. Longworth has written for The Washington Post, The Times (London), The Independent, and Bon Appétit magazine.
