About this deal

Lamashtu is often depicted as a mythological hybrid, with a hairy body, a lioness’ head with donkey’s teeth and ears, long fingers and fingernails, and the feet of a bird with sharp talons. Director William Friedkin denies this, and has cited that Deitz's actual screen time is less that one minute, as she served as little more than a body double for Linda Blair. Louis, Missouri concerning the possession of a 14-year-old known as "Robbie Mannheim" (or sometimes "Roland Doe"). Pazuzu was invoked in apotropaic amulets, which combat the powers of his rival, the malicious goddess Lamashtu, who was believed to cause harm to mother and child during childbirth.

Even so, although he was never considered the most benevolent of supernatural beings in ancient Mesopotamia - and was certainly regarded as an evil demon - he was not evil incarnate and was frequently invoked for protection from evil.

Pazuzu first appears in ancient Babylonian texts as the King of the Winds, with the purpose of protecting mankind from hardships, other demons, and the more vulnerable, such as pregnant women and children. Yet the surprise of encountering this demon from The Exorcist in the British Museum is actually an insight into why this is such a memorable film. Hunkeler, who was given pseudonyms to protect his identity, was 13 years old when the disturbances began.

After a struggle, he declines Pazuzu's offer of power and Regan banishes Pazuzu, appearing in the form of locusts. In Sumerian, Akkadian, Assyrian and Babylonian mythology, Pazuzu (sometimes Fazuzu or Pazuza) was the king of the demons of the wind, and son of the god Hanbi. The Nimrud Dogs were thought to be imbued with the spirit of actual dogs, associated with Gula, who were primarily seen as protective animals. Mercedes McCambridge regurgitated on a mixture of chewed, mushy apple and raw egg to produce the sound effect of Regan's projectile vomiting. The mystery of its provenance is never explained, but its discovery along with the Pazuzu head sets up the theme of an age-old battle between good and evil.

The majority of the film deals with Regan's demonic possession by a being she initially refers to as "Captain Howdy. I did find this YouTube video explaining the gross misrepresentation of Pazuzu’s purpose on this earth.

He is imagined as an especially frightening figure capable of scaring off any lesser demon or ghost.

But that still doesn’t fully explain why other Mesopotamian demons didn’t weather the course of time to the same degree. Although not making a physical appearance, he is a prominent character in the game, appearing in statues, idols, and ancient imagery. Spells, Incantations, and special artifacts were used to gain the favor and protection of the demon, [5] such artifacts being placed in and around the home, or worn on the person to achieve the desired effect. In this form, the demon is played by actress Eileen Dietz, who underwent makeup tests for the " possessed Regan", wore one of the alternate make-ups in her role as the demon. The camera lingers on the back-lit statue, as the noise of a nearby pack of dogs fighting provides an atmospheric soundtrack for the demon statue's canine snarl. These beings, as depicted on several Cylinder seals, have wings, and each represents a different direction of wind; South, East, West, and North.
